Fuel Temperature Compensation Matters
The use of diesel-powered equipment in ports is widespread and mainly due to efficiency, performance, and reliability. Moving millions of containers through port terminals requires the consumption of millions of litres of diesel. Terminals typically mitigate cost components, improve asset and process efficiency through analytics. This means accurately monitoring, analysing, and managing fuel usage and consumption data.
To improve storage integrity, usage efficiency and prevent misuse, constant fuel monitoring should be automated. Fuel temperature plays a key role. Fuel losses are partially due to temperature variations. Unless you are applying temperature compensation practices, you will have reported losses. If the delivery, storage, and dispensing volumes differ due to temperature variances, accurate fuel management data will be compromised. Diesel fuel contracts or expands approximately 0.85ml for every degree change in temperature. On a delivery of 20,000 litres every degree in variation will account for 17 litres. 5 million litres of fuel delivered over a year at an average 15°C will shrink to 4,969,685 litres if stored in tanks at an average 10°C. For the port operator, that means 30,315 litres of fuel were delivered yet were not available for use. Simply put, automatic temperature compensation (ATC) is required for accurate fuel management.
